Through this course, students will gain an understanding of and proficiency in the basic concepts and fundamental elements of safety science. They will learn about accident causation theories, accident control perspectives, approaches and methods for ship safety management, modern safety management theories and applications, onboard safety management and human factors, crew management methods and international conventions, crew responsibilities, and regulations for onboard safety management. Students will also acquire knowledge of the structure and relevant content of the SOLAS 74 Convention, basic knowledge of maritime law, maritime traffic safety laws, and the main content of relevant international conventions. They will become familiar with the provisions and annexes of the MARPOL 73/78 Convention, as well as the regulations in China for preventing ship pollution of the marine environment. Students will gain proficiency in emergency preparedness and response, ship firefighting, ship survival, ship stability, understanding international maritime search and rescue, and understanding and mastering emergency measures for the transportation of dangerous goods and onboard medical care and first aid. Lastly, they will acquire knowledge of maritime investigation and handling and maritime prevention strategies.
