This course introduces the basic elements and functionalities of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and how they are designed, deployed and operated for various traffic and transportation management purposes. Main topics covered by this course include transportation systems management and analysis, historical development, functional areas and institutional issues of ITS, advanced traffic management systems, advanced traveler information systems, advanced vehicle control systems, advanced public transportation systems, commercial vehicle operations, and role of ITS in travel demand management. The focus of this course is on the technological, systems and institutional aspects of ITS and its subsystems. To make the course self-contained, relevant transportation systems analysis methods will be covered, and elaborated if necessary.
